The Anthem Marathon courses through Richmond this Saturday. While it has nothing to do with farming, it impacts access to the city’s farmer’s markets. The Farmer’s Market at St. Stephen’s will be open from 9am – 12pm and you can get there if you plan your route carefully. Check the marathon course map here and view the road closures here. Good luck to you if you are running tomorrow!

Produce items available this week are apples (Fuji, Granny Smith, Stayman, and Pink Lady), arugula, cilantro, baby leeks, mint, parsley, radishes, rosemary, salad mix, scallions, and Japanese salad turnips. Find us at the farmer’s market @ St. Stephen’s tomorrow morning from 9 am – 12pm, our second to last market attendance for us this year – November 21st will be our final day at market.

I am told that parenting is hard work. Being new parents, Rebecca and I are often assaulted with unsolicited advice from strangers on how to best care for and raise our Georgia. We take it in stride. The words of William Martin in his poem Make the Ordinary Come Alive speaks to me. His “advice” is from his book, The Parent’s Tao Te Ching: Ancient Advice for Modern Parents, which addresses themes that support loving parent- child relationships: responding without judgment, emulating natural processes, and balancing between doing and being. We will do our best our best to make the ordinary come alive for our sweet Georgia.

Do not ask your children

to strive for extraordinary lives.

Such striving may seem admirable,

but it is a way of foolishness.

Help them instead to find the wonder

and the marvel of an ordinary life.

Show them the joy of tasting

tomatoes, apples, and pears.

Show them how to cry

when pets and people die.

Show them the infinite pleasure

in the touch of a hand.

And make the ordinary come alive for them.

The extraordinary will take care of itself.

Be well, eat healthy, and be kind to yourself and others.

Alistar, Rebecca & Georgia
